IMPORTS AND EXPORTS (TRAVELLER'S GOODS) REGULATIONS 1980

(LI 1250).

 

IN exercise of the powers conferred on the Minister responsible for Trade by section 22 of the Imports and Exports Act 1980 (Act 418) these Regulations are made this 9th day of September, 1980.

Regulation 1—Importation of Goods by Travellers into Ghana.

Any person entering Ghana may at the time of such entry import goods as part of his personal effects without import licence where—

(a) the goods are not for commercial purposes;

(b) the goods are not prohibited or banned under any law in force;

(c) no transfer of foreign exchange through the Bank of Ghana or any commercial bank in Ghana is required; and

(d) the goods whether accompanied or unaccompanied have been declared to the Comptroller of Customs and Excise or any officer authorised by him in accordance with the Customs and Excise Decree 1972 (N.R.C.D. 114).

Regulation 2—Special provisions relating to importation of motor vehicles.

(1) Any person who has been resident outside Ghana for a continuous period of not less than twelve months, and who is entering Ghana may at the time of such entry import a motor vehicle as part of his personal effects.

(2) Nothing in these Regulations shall be deemed to permit—

(a) the importation into Ghana of a motor vehicle by a person who has not attained the age of 18 years;

(b) the importation into Ghana of a motor vehicle which  is more than four years old reckoning from the date it was first registered outside Ghana;

(c) the importation into Ghana of more than one motor vehicle by any one person within any period of four years;

(d) the transfer of a motor vehicle imported into Ghana under these Regulations within the first two years of its registration in Ghana.

Regulation 3—Interpretation.

In these Regulations—

"goods" means passenger's baggage namely, household effects, domestic and electrical appliances, household provisions collector's pieces, pets, tools, machinery or equipment necessary for the exercise of the calling, trade or profession of the passenger;

"Minister" means the Minister responsible for Trade; and

"motor vehicle" means a two or three-wheeled mechanically propelled vehicle, bus, land rover, saloon car, station wagon truck, or van as specified from time to time by the Government.

Regulation 4—L.I. 1194 revoked.

The Imports and Exports Regulations, 1979 (L.I. 1194) is hereby revoked.
